Proposal for Pluckley Church of England Primary School to open a Preschool -CONSULTATION
Pluckley CoE Primary School and The Kemnal Academies Trust (Â鶹ÃÛÌÒmvÔÚÏß¹Û¿´) would like to propose that a pre-school is opened at Pluckley School.
Our shared objective is to provide high quality, child-centred preschool education to children and families in the local community within a school setting. As part of Â鶹ÃÛÌÒmvÔÚÏß¹Û¿´, Pluckley CoE Primary School’s purpose is to work together as a community of schools to ensure that every child, whatever their background, receives a high quality education.
The preschool cohort will be taught alongside the Year R cohort, using the experienced pedagogy of mixed-age teaching already present in Y1 - Y6. The school’s pedagogy is to teach to the top and then to support and adapt where needed. In a typical Year R
class there will be children who have a wide range of academic abilities and the intention would be to bring the pre-school children into that range as much as possible. Utilising quality first teaching and skilled adults to create an environment where all children can flourish and thrive.
The benefits of opening a preschool within the TKATfamily will be to:
● provide spaces for children aged 3-4 within the village of Pluckley, utilising our
outstanding EYFS provision, the expertise of the adults and the quality of
resources and provision already in place in our Reception class
● ensure our families with preschool aged children have access to a high quality
provision of curriculum and personnel development
● Include 15 or 30 hour funding or parent funded sessions either as full or half-
days to suit the individual children
● provide consistency of practice and procedure between early years education
and Key Stage 1 with a strong focus on oracy, early reading, phonics and
maths mastery
● work with families, supporting parents in developing their understanding of
early reading, maths, online safety and positive behaviour management,
through the community parent hub
● provide early intervention for vulnerable children. The school's track record
can be seen through excellent outcomes at the end of Key Stage 2. These
outcomes are reflective of both teaching standards and nurture support
provided to children and families, which will be extended to the preschool
children.
● identify need early - the school’s Special Education Needs (SEND) team will
work with preschool families after admissions, to assess any level of need and
signpost early interventions and support where necessary. This will ensure
that Early Help interventions and SEND assessments, with Education Health &
Care Needs Assessments are already in place by the time children are of
school age.
● provide opportunities for Reception age children to act as role models, to
practice and hone their oracy skills, to support younger children during child
initiated times and share their phonetic and mathematical understanding.
We also recognise that a good preschool helps children to become ‘school ready’ and
Pluckley CoE Primary and TKATwelcome the opportunity to support this important
first stage of education.
What would change?
The staff team consists of 2 qualified, experienced teachers, a supporting adult and
support when needed from a higher level supporting adult, and the new pre-school
children will be accommodated in our large Reception classroom which has capacity
for up to 30 pupils.
From 2025-26 onwards our Year R and pre-school pupils would be taught in this
shared space. Phonics and maths mastery will be structured, in delivery, the same as
lower school; along with child initiated. Children will be grouped according to their
needs. Early phonics and maths will also be introduced, which is in line with preschool
development. Child initiated is a valuable element of early child development, which
is why it is an important part of our early years curriculum. This will continue but
resources will be adapted to ensure that all children have access allowing them the
ability to thrive socially, emotionally and the confidence to problem solve and make
decisions.
